About Guido Sotomayor

About Guido Sotomayor

He stepped from one boulder to another, peering intently into the crystal clear waters of the river. He paused and pushing up his sleeve, he crouched down and reached into the water for a stone. He shook the water off it and held the smoky grey river stone up so that he could study its shape and markings. Already he could envisage the stone, beautifully polished and with silver inlay, hanging on a silver choker... aaah yes, this stone would be perfect.... Born in Quito, Ecuador, Guido Sotomayor is a well known jewellery artist. He works with a range of local natural materials including tagua seeds, chonta wood, espóndilus shell, black coral, nacre and seeds which he gathers from nature’s jewellery box in the Ecuadorian Amazon. He is best known for his stunning pendants created from river stone. The stones have been rounded and polished by the rivers over countless centuries and are beautifully smooth to touch. They range in colour from varying shades of brown to light smoky greys through to dark graphite tones which perfectly accentuate the stone’s individual graining. Guido spends hours in his studio creating unique neck pendants from these stones. He decorates each with a Quechua Amazónican symbol. Some of the symbols refer to ‘inner light and intuition’, whilst others are reminders of the infinite nature of the cosmos or are shamans to bring the wearer luck and protection. The finished stone is carefully hung from a black leather lace or simple, elegant choker. These stylish necklaces can be worn by both men and women and tucked in their gift box is an explanation of the symbol that has been used. Guido firmly believes that being a craftsman is a way of life rather than just a job. He uses the techniques that he learnt when he was younger in a variety of innovative ways, carefully adapting them to the natural materials he works with and which clearly reflect his character. In 2014, Guido Sotomayor was presented with the UNESCO Handicraft Excellence Award for his river stone jewellery.
