About Naile Bozkurt

The dance of colour with the water... Naile stood in front of the group of tourists who watched enchanted as she finished the beautiful paint pattern before gently placing some white paper on top of it and then moments later, carefully lifting the brightly decorated paper from the surface of the water... Ebru is one of Turkey’s traditional Ottoman arts with a history spanning more than 500 years. Ebru is the method used to marble paper and is used to decorate the covers of hand bound books and official documents and decrees. The techniques for paper marbling originated in Turkey, but the idea was spread to other countries by travellers using the Silk Road that passed through Turkey. Naile Bozkurt and her beautiful work are proof that you can enjoy art at any age! Naila is married, with two children and has had a successful career in nursing – until she discovered Ebru in 1998. She started by practising the decoration of fabric using the Ebru technique and two years later, decided to take lessons in classical Ebru. She was then given the title of ‘Intangible Bearer of Cultural Heritage’ by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and opened her gallery in Göreme, Cappadocia (central Turkey). To date, Naile has taken part in 43 shows and exhibitions all over Turkey, and in other countries such as Germany, South Korea, China and The Philippines. In 2012 the First World Ebru Day took place, and at it, Naile won an award for her stunning work. It is indeed fascinating to watch Naile at work and tourists who discover her gallery love to see her creating beautiful designs. Ebru is ‘a mystical art that reflects the soul of the marbler’.
