Ebru painting with motives from the Seljuk Empire. A piece of Ebru is created by carefully placing a piece of paper on the surface of some water that has different coloured paint patterns on its surface. The design is absorbed by the paper which is carefully lifted off the surface of the water and allowed to dry. There is plenty of skill involved as the water has to be thickened so that it can support the weight of the paint and natural pigments used. The paint is then dropped on the surface and using one of her homemade horse hair brushes and a finely toothed metal comb, Naile then slowly and precisely creates the design. The techniques she uses have changed little in generations and what makes the Ebru design so special is that only one piece of paper or glass can be placed on the pattern each time, so each pattern is a unique masterpiece. Ebru is the first Turkish art to be recognised by UNESCO on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
