The shape of this ‘Meiping’ vase, which translates into ‘Plum’ vase, is so called because it was considered to be the perfect shape to hold a plum branch during the Song Dynasty (960–1271 AD). Characterized by a narrow mouth, a small neck resting on high, broad shoulders, and a tall body tapering off to a shallow ring foot, this spectacular work is covered in a lustrous sapphire blue glaze. The hand-painted decoration on the exterior in white, black and red depicts Great Egret birds in a reed pond.
